Gagarin’s start – Launch Pad No. 1

This is Launch Pad No. 1 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, from which, on April 12, 1961 at 09:07 a.m. Moscow time, the Vostok launch vehicle carried the first human in space – Yuri Gagarin.

From this very spot, the following were also launched:

• Vostok spacecraft with other cosmonauts (including German Titov, Valentina Tereshkova, and others)
• Soyuz rockets
• The USSR’s first lunar missions.
